The team that James Roland must put together to form Colorado Attorney Services is all about providing you with exceptional service. Here is how we do it.

How to Join the Colorado Bar Association

Colorado Attorney Services has been providing people with excellent service across the state of Colorado for many years now. That means we completely understand what lawyers, paralegals, and private individuals are expecting from a process server. But have you ever wondered what’s expected of them? What does it take to become a lawyer in Colorado?

Whether you're a fresh-faced law grad or an experienced attorney relocating to the Centennial State, joining the Colorado Bar Association (CBA) is a smart move. The CBA offers invaluable resources, networking opportunities, and professional development to help lawyers thrive in every stage of their careers. But how do you become a member? In this article, we’ll cover how you can get started.

Be Licensed to Practice Law in Colorado

Before you can join the Colorado Bar Association, you must be licensed to practice law in Colorado. That means:

  • Passing the Colorado Bar Exam (or qualifying under UBE transfer or reciprocity rules)
  • Meeting the Character and Fitness requirements of the Colorado Office of Attorney Admissions
  • Being sworn in and admitted to the Colorado Supreme Court

If you haven’t gone through this process yet, start with the Colorado Office of Attorney Admissions.

Visit the Colorado Bar Association Website

Once you're licensed, head to the official Colorado Bar Association website:

https://www.cobar.org

This is your hub for membership info, CLE programs, legal news, and access to practice-specific sections.

Choose Your Membership Type

The CBA offers several types of membership:

  • Regular Membership – For active attorneys in Colorado.
  • New Lawyers Division – For attorneys in their first five years of practice.
  • Judiciary/Government/Nonprofit – Special rates available for public sector attorneys.
  • Retired/Inactives – Reduced-cost membership for those not actively practicing.
  • Affiliate or Associate Memberships – For paralegals, law students, and out-of-state attorneys.

Each category has its own dues structure, which you can review on the membership page.

Complete the Online Membership Application

Once you’ve picked the right membership category, complete the online form through the CBA website.

You’ll be asked for basic information like:

  • Your attorney registration number
  • Contact info
  • Practice area(s)
  • Preferred bar sections (you can join multiple!)

You can pay your dues online, and you're in!

Get Involved

CBA membership is more than just a checkbox—it’s a gateway to:

  • Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
  • Professional networking events
  • Specialty sections and committees
  • Pro bono and volunteer opportunities
  • Practice resources and publications like The Colorado Lawyer

Joining is the easy part—engaging is what makes it valuable.

Why Join the Colorado Bar Association?

Even though it’s not mandatory to join the CBA to practice law in Colorado (you only need to be licensed), membership gives you:

  • A strong professional network
  • Career support and mentorship
  • A voice in the state’s legal community
  • Advocacy on legal and legislative issues affecting your practice

Whether you're looking to connect, learn, lead, or serve, the Colorado Bar Association is the perfect partner in your legal journey. Don’t just practice law in Colorado—be part of the legal community that shapes it.
